STEP 1: EVALUATION & DIAGNOSIS
Dr. Hulsey begins with a thorough evaluation of the frenum tissue and a review of your child’s symptoms and history. He will assess the degree of restriction, discuss how it is affecting your child’s function, and explain whether a release is recommended. If a release is indicated, he will walk you through the procedure in detail so you feel fully prepared before any treatment begins.

Tongue-tie, clinically known as ankyloglossia, is a condition in which the lingual frenum, the band of tissue connecting the underside of the tongue to the floor of the mouth, is too short, thick, or tight. This restricts the tongue’s range of motion and can interfere with a variety of functions depending on the patient’s age and the severity of the restriction.
Lip-tie refers to a similar condition affecting the labial frenum, the tissue connecting the upper lip to the gum above the front teeth. When this tissue is too tight, it can restrict lip movement and create challenges with breastfeeding, oral hygiene, and spacing of the front teeth. Both tongue-tie and lip-tie can occur together or independently.

STEP 2: LASER RELEASE PROCEDURE
The frenectomy or frenotomy is performed using the Solea CO2 laser, which precisely releases the restrictive tissue without the need for scalpels or sutures. The laser cauterizes as it works, which significantly reduces bleeding. The procedure is quick, typically completed in a matter of minutes, and the laser’s precision minimizes discomfort and tissue trauma compared to traditional surgical techniques.
STEP 3: RECOVERY & FOLLOW-UP
